How to Make a Digital Vision Board for Your Ideal Life: 6 Key Steps

Write the vision, make it plain down, make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.”- Habakkuk 2:2

The idea of having a vision for your life sets you apart from everyone because everyone has individual goals. It gives you focus and helps you set goals towards your desired and ideal life. This is exactly what a vision board does, just that it’s a bit more creative, so you’ll have to unleash your creative self on this one.

A Digital Vision Board is simply a visualization tool, collage or representation of the things you want to achieve in your life. With a vision board, you can paste your ideal life by compiling images, words, quotes and phrases that will inspire, empower and remind you of your passion, purpose, goals and ideal life.

Having a vision board is one good investment that you will always be thankful for. Sometimes when you’re not feeling inspired, your vision board is the one place you should look at and get yourself back. When you feel like you’re loosing yourself, your vision board should put you back on track and remind you of the life you’ve always dreamt of.

Most people are glued to their phones these days and are online most of the time, so being able to access your digital vision board even while travelling will help you stay focused on your goals and generally give you a reason to keep moving forward in life. Talk about always keeping your eyes on the prize- that’s what a digital vision board will help you do.

With a digital vision board, you can easily create several boards for different goals, since it’s easier to create and more flexible than a traditional vision board.

Now, let’s get started, shall we?

Before Creating Your Vision Board

I’m a strong believer in setting life goals, writing them, envisioning my ideal life and taking steps towards achieving them. One of the key habits that have helped me thus far is writing down my goals. By this, I mean both short and long term goals from 1, 5 to 10 year goal plans backed up with actionable steps towards achieving them.

It’s not enough to envision, we must also be specific to a good extent and then followup on our plans. Sometimes, life may not always go the way we’ve planned but having a focus in life will generally help us project the future, create our values and also know what we don’t want in order to focus fully on what we desire.

So now, it’s important that you take some time out and write down your 5-10 year goal plan. If you’re willing to go deep, then you can separate them into- spiritual, academic, financial, travel, career, family, love goals and more.

Write down your goals in the past as if they have already happened. For example

Career Goals:

  1. This is August 2025 and I have become an influential fashion designer in Nigeria.

Implementation/Action Steps:

  1. Attend fashion design school in London
  2. Take an online class in business management….
  3. Attend the Lagos Fashion & Design Week Event
  4. Attend Mercedes Fashion Week SA (Networking, business, mentorship)
  5. Study my favourite brands (Coco Chanel, Alexander Wang, JBL, David Tlale)
  6. Start working on my first collection by May 2019

When you’re done with writing out your career goals, then you can move to financial goals and others. I don’t believe in aimlessly creating a vision board. When we are intentional about our dreams, goals, vision and purpose in life, we will begin to attract them to us and they give us something to hold on to.

Once you’re done with this step, then you can move on.

You Will Need:

  • A paper, journal or notepad for writing
  • Internet Access (Obviously)
  • Picture creating softwares (PicMonkey, Canva, Phonto, Pinterest, Picasa, Powerpoint etc)
  • A picture of yourself (optional)
  • Your Smart Phone and/or Laptop
  • Your mind to think far and beyond (The most important!)

Some Ideas for Goal /Vision Setting:

  • Career/Business Goals (Degrees, training, dream job, promotion, etc)
  • Travel Goals (Ghana, Singapore, China, India, South Africa, Nigeria, Seychelles, Zanzibar, Mauritus, Rwanda, St. Kitts, Greece)
  • Health Goals (Healthy life style, Workout, yoga, Jillian Michaels, detox regularly )
  • Spiritual Goals (Grow my faith in God, daily bible readings, affirmations, Help spiritually weaker people, win souls, attend church retreats, serve in church/community)
  • Giving Goals (Sponsor at least 1 child a year through Slum2School, give my time to building a local library through GemStone group, Attend and contribute to the Face Africa Gala)
  • Personal Development/Growth (Right inner circle, read at least 1 book per month, take 1 online course quarterly or twice a year, attend networking events with likeminded and inspiring people, attend at least 1 conference a year)
  • Financial Goals (Save at least 20 % of my income, pay my tithe, invest in real estate, revenue goal from online business in 2016 = $1,200,000)
  • Family (Visit my family twice a year, call my family everyday or at least chat on the family whatsapp group, send my siblings on a vacation next year)
  • General life goals: Do more of what makes me happy, Love, Live, Laugh, Learn!

Steps to Creating a Digital Vision Board

Write Down Keywords/Phrases

Now we are done with writing our ultimate life goals, then we can start writing down specific details related to our digital vision board. Do you want a vision board just for your travel goals? Or do you just want to create one for your life goals in order to get your life more focused and start achieving your goals?

Write down some keywords, phrases, quotes and concepts that will help you create your vision board faster. So, if you want to become a fashion designer in some years, you might want to write down fashion design, add a quote by Coco Chanel and maybe add the specific training school you would love to attend. If you plan to travel to 10 countries in 3-5 years, then you need to list down all the countries down. If you would love to attend Harvard Business School in few years, then also put that down.

Identifying keywords will make the digital vision board process easier and you will gradually become more conscious about what you plan to achieve in life. Don’t limit yourself. Forget fear! If you envision 5 lambourgini’s or yatchs, please write it down! Impossible is nothing (make this your mantra)

While doing this step, make the atmosphere inspiring. If you’re in a very rowdy or irritable environment, you will not be able to achieve the ultimate goal for this exercise. Look for a calm and relaxing atmosphere while playing some of your favorite music.

Step 2

Choose A Style Theme or Guide (Optional)

Have you seen some really cool instagram or pinterest pages that make you want to just jump right into that scene? Well, I have. Looking at pages like travelnoire, netgeo, humansofny and others, just keep me inspired and sometimes remind me of some of the places I want to visit or things I plan to do.

A style theme is basically patterns or template you follow to help you create your ideal visual goal. This can be applied to brands or blogs. But in relation to a vision board, it helps you to have elements such as a tone, fonts, colors, image styles and more. To create a style theme, you will collect, organize, and create images and text that inspire you and that are related to your ideal them.

For example, if you want a lifestyle theme for your digital vision board, you will want to stick with pictures that are vibrant and literally inspire you to work towards your goals. If you want the tone of your vision board to be playful or serious, then a style theme/guide will help you achieve that.

This step is particularly essential if you’re creating specific vision boards for different categories (travel, career, financial etc).

Get creative and write texts over a picture to indicate the specific country or region that it represents. Anytime you look at the entire travel board, you will stop being upset and remember that you have something great to look forward to.

Step 3

Choose Images that Reflect Your Goals

Now you’re done with the first two steps, it’s time to start gathering different images across the web that reflect your goals. Luckily snapshots come in handy. Scroll through instagram, pinterest, google images, blogs, online magazines, stock photo platforms and more and then save pictures in different categories on your phone or laptop.

If you want to create creative texts or phrases, quotes, personal mantra’s, affirmations and more, work with tools such as Phonto (for android), Picasa, Photoshop, just to mention a few.

Step 4

Create your Digital Vision Board using Free Tools

Now you have your images, words, theme, goals and mind ready to start creating your board. Use some of the tools listed above (Canva, Picasa, Studio, Powerpoint, Pinterest, PicMonkey etc) to start creating your vision board.

You can check for sample vision boards online or just use your own theme to create a unique one that totally inspires you and spurs you to action.

Step 5

Save Different Versions of Your Board

When you’re done creating your vision board, save them in different formats. Send them to yourself as an email, put them on your laptop, phone, dropbox, pinterest folders and generally everywhere that will remind you of them even when you’re travelling or not close to your computer.

Step 6

Print and Display (Optional)

Creating a digital vision board first is very easy and fast because it allows you to print them whenever you want to.

If you decide to print them out, display your vision board somewhere you’ll see it every single day and immediately you wake up.

Finally- The Most Important of All

Don’t forget that it’s not enough to visualize, set goals and get creative. The most important aspect of this exercise is to actually put your thoughts, dreams and goals to work. ACTION helps you achieve your goals and helps you become clear about what you plan to achieve.

Do you want to get clarity in life? Clarity comes by engaging and acting on your goals. It’s not something that happens in the mind only. As you start implementing your goals, you will gradually become more confident and convinced about your ideal life and goals to the extent that no one can tell you anything contrary.

So, what are you waiting for? Get creating!

Now it’s your turn: Do you have a vision and have you written them down yet? Do you have a vision? What steps did you take towards creating your vision board? How has this helped you to achieve your passion, dreams, goals and purpose in life?

Honestly: I really appreciate you for reading. Please share your thoughts, experiences and ideas in the comment box below.

Life is more meaningful when we share. Let’s get more people achieving their purpose by finding their passion.
